I honestly don’t know how some parents pull it off.

Every summer, I see parents who skip camp registration altogether, and I just wonder how they plan to survive the next two months. Keeping kids entertained all day, every day, sounds like an absolute circus, and I am definitely not cut out to be the ringmaster.

Sure, at first, staying home sounds like a great idea. You picture this perfect, happy time with your kids. But there are only so many trips to the neighbourhood splash pad you can take, and only so many board games you can drag out of the closet before the charm wears off. By week three, you are just done with the whole idea. You need your sanity back.

Kids also need way more than just a parent acting as a cruise ship director until September. They don’t just need their time filled; they need to figure out who they are when no one is holding their hand. Camp gives them that space to grow up a little bit. It proves to them that they can survive a little discomfort without the world ending.

The biggest shift with my daughter is always in her independence. At home, even when I try to let her fly solo, I am constantly hovering to catch her if something goes wrong. For example, when I let her go outside and play; even though I really trust her, but secretly, I am standing at our upstairs window, watching her every move from behind the glass where she can’t see me. It is just my basic motherly instinct, even if my husband swears I am being way too much.

At camp, their safety net vanishes, and it is the best thing for them. If they drop their towel in the water, they have to figure out how to dry off. If they want clean socks, they have to dig through their bag to find them. If they have a conflict with a camper, they have to figure out a way to apologize and learn how to compromise. It teaches them to stop relying on their parents to fix their problems and shows them that disappointment doesn’t last forever.

There is also a wonderful sense of freedom at camp. School has a funny way of putting labels on kids early on. You become the shy kid, the class clown, or the quiet one who sits in the back. Camp doesn’t care about any of that. Nobody knows who you were during the school year, and nobody cares. Every camper gets to introduce themselves as they are, and be exactly who they want to be in that moment. For a lot of kids, that breath of fresh air is exactly what they need.

They also spend so much time outside. They are hiking, swimming, climbing, and running around during games. They are active, getting dirty, and having fun. This reminds them that entertainment doesn’t always have to come from a screen.

Of course, some parents might think that camp is just play and that kids don’t learn anything. But that’s not true. Camp just teaches things in a completely different way. It’s a unique testing ground where kids get to test their limits on their own terms, venture out of their comfort zones, and discover strengths they didn’t know they had.

Beyond the activities, camp is great for character development. We spend so much time at home talking to our kids about kindness, respect, responsibility, and empathy. Camp gives them a chance to practice those values every single day. This happens in the everyday moments, like including a kid who is sitting alone, comforting a nervous little friend, or helping a counsellor with a task. Those experiences become their biggest takeaways.

Another thing I appreciate is that camp brings together kids who might never meet otherwise. Kids from different schools, different neighbourhoods, and different backgrounds end up spending time together and making friends. It is a beautiful reminder that kids have an incredible ability to connect if they are just given the opportunity.

I also believe camp should be something every child has the chance to experience. Thankfully, we have some incredible communities in Ontario working to make that happen. Organizations like Amici Children's Camp Charity and Moorelands Kids do amazing work sending children to camp who might not otherwise be able to afford it, while local programs like the Toronto Welcome Policy help make city day camps accessible to everyone. It really does take a village, and these groups make sure no kid gets left behind.

When my daughter comes home every day covered in dirt and smelling like a mix of sunscreen and a long day in the sun, I notice her feeling a little more independent and confident than she did that morning. These changes don’t show up on a report card, but as a parent, they’re the things that matter most.

So yes, summer camp keeps the calendar full and gives us a much-needed break. We shouldn’t feel guilty for admitting we need that. But camp is about more than just filling the hours. It’s about how those few weeks shape who our kids are growing into.

By Thursday, they’ve got a nickname for each other. There’s an inside joke you’re clearly not in on. And your kid announces, with the total certainty only an eight-year-old can pull off, that this is their new best friend, the best friend, like the position was vacant and just got filled.

You met this kid’s parent for the first time thirty seconds ago, standing in the pickup line, both of you mildly stunned by how fast this happened.

It’s a little funny how normal this feels once you’ve done camp a few summers running. The first time it happens you think, okay, that’s sweet, kids are dramatic. By the third or fourth summer you start to notice the pattern. It happens almost every single week. Some kid your child barely knew on Monday is a whole best friend by Thursday, and by Friday the two of them are already plotting a sleepover, like this is a done deal and you're just the last one to sign off on it.

I used to think it was just a kid thing, the way little kids fall in love with everything fast and hard. But it happens with the older ones too. Ten, eleven, twelve year olds who are usually pretty guarded about who they let in, and somehow by day three they’re finishing each other’s sentences.

So what’s actually going on here. Because it’s clearly not nothing.

It’s the amount of time, not the magic

Here’s the plain version. At school, your kid gets maybe twenty minutes of actual social time with any one classmate on a given day, split up by class periods and split further by however many other kids are around. At camp, it’s a full day, same small group, over and over. Drop-off, activities, snack, more activities, pickup. Repeat tomorrow with the same faces. Four days of that is more real hang-out time than a whole month of school lunches.

Kids don’t need much time to bond when the time is actually uninterrupted. They just need enough of it in a row.

And a little bit of shared chaos helps

The other piece is what they’re actually doing with that time. It’s rarely quiet. It's a canoe that tips in the lake and everyone ends up soaked and laughing, a scavenger hunt that runs twenty minutes over because nobody could find the last clue, a swim lesson where somebody finally got their float unassisted and the whole group cheered.

Little shared moments of “we did that together” build trust fast, faster than sitting quietly next to someone ever could. Ask any adult about their closest friendships and a lot of them will point to something slightly stressful they went through together, a bad trip, a hard year, a group project that almost fell apart. Kids are doing a tiny, low-stakes version of that every single day at camp.

Nobody’s carrying last year’s reputation

This is the part that gets me every time. At school, kids get sorted early. Somebody’s the shy one, somebody’s the loud one, somebody’s still living down something embarrassing that happened in grade two. None of that shows up at camp.

Nobody there has any history on your kid. They just get to be whoever they are that week, and so does the other kid, and there’s something genuinely freeing about two people meeting with a totally blank slate. It’s one of the reasons camp works so well for kids who’ve had a rough year socially at school. Nobody at camp got the memo about who they’re “supposed” to be.

And it’s worth taking seriously, not just filing under cute. Ask any teacher and they’ll tell you the same thing in their own way, it doesn’t take a big friend group to change a kid’s year. One person who genuinely gets them does most of the work. So when your kid comes out of camp attached to some kid they met Monday, that’s not a small thing.

What’s actually worth doing about it

It’s tempting to just let these friendships fizzle. Camp ends, everyone goes back to their regular life, and by September nobody even remembers the other kid’s name. But it doesn’t have to go that way, and the fix is simple, swap numbers with the other parent at pickup, even if it feels a little forward to ask. Try to get one hangout on the calendar before the week is even over, because if it’s not booked by Friday, it usually doesn’t happen at all.

It’s a small effort for something that clearly means a lot to your kid in the moment, even if the friendship doesn’t last past September. And sometimes it does last. Plenty of kids’ longest friendships started exactly this way, two strangers on a Monday, inseparable by Thursday, and somehow still texting each other three years later.

If your kid comes home with a new best friend this week, don’t brush it off as a phase. Get the parent’s number. Try to make it real before the week ends. You might be watching the start of something.

So it’s the middle of July. Your kid is at camp right now, probably eating a freezie, and you should feel great about that.

Except you just looked at the calendar. And August is... open. Wide open.

Maybe a session got cancelled. Maybe the week at Grandma’s fell through. Maybe you booked July during the winter registration madness and told yourself you’d sort out August later. Well, now is later.

I want to say one thing before anything else: you’re not too late. I know it feels like everything sold out in January. A lot of it did. But August works differently than February, and if you know where to look, you can still pull this off.

Why August isn’t actually a lost cause

Here’s the thing nobody tells you during the winter scramble: camp spots don’t stay locked all summer.

Families cancel constantly in late July. A cottage invite shows up. Someone’s work trip moves. A kid does one week of rock climbing camp and announces they’re retiring from rock climbing.

Every one of those changes is a spot that opens up. Sometimes with three days’ notice.

And camps want those spots filled. An empty spot earns them nothing, so a lot of programs work their waitlists hard right about now. Some even add sessions when enough people are lined up.

One more thing in your favour: tons of families travel in August. Less competition for the same weeks. The field is thinner than it was in January.

Where to actually look

Stop refreshing the three camp websites you already know. Time to widen the search.

CampTO first. The city is the biggest camp operator in Toronto, full stop. Community centres, museums, even Toronto Island. And the registration site has a filter that shows only programs with open spots, which is exactly the filter you want right now.

Don’t sleep on the specialty ones either. CampTO Plus runs everything from ball hockey to circus arts to cooking camps at Montgomery’s Inn. There are canoe camps on the Island where the ferry’s included. There are Adapted CampTO programs if your kid needs extra support.

Then go big. Camps with ten locations across the city have way more turnover than the tiny beloved program with sixteen spots and a three-year waitlist. Think multi-location day camps, YMCA camps, university campus camps. A cancellation somewhere in a big system is much more likely to match the week you need.

Check the roundup lists. Kids Out and About keeps a running list of August camps, and the parenting sites publish “camps with spots left” lists every midsummer. Those lists exist for exactly this moment. Use them.

And remember it doesn’t have to be camp-camp. Drop-in programs at your local community centre. Library stuff. A babysitter split with another family. Trading days with a friend, where you take both kids Tuesday and she takes them Thursday. The goal isn’t a perfect program. The goal is a covered calendar.

How to move fast without booking something you’ll regret

Yes, move quickly. But don’t move so fast that you accidentally register for a camp in Scarborough when you’re based out of Jane and Bloor. No spot is worth fighting across the entire city at 8:00 AM.

Get on waitlists today. Even for sessions marked full. This is the single best move you can make. Late-July waitlists are short and they move fast. You might be two cancellations away from a spot. And camps look at waitlist numbers when deciding whether to add a session. There’s zero downside. You can always say no.

Pick up the phone. Websites lag behind reality. A session that says “full” online might’ve had a cancellation this morning that nobody’s updated yet. A two-minute call beats an hour of browsing. Just ask: “Anything open the week of August 17th, or anything you expect to open?” Camp office staff know their cancellations. They also remember the nice parent who called.

Check the before-and-after care. Most camps run 9 to 4, which is not the shape of anyone’s workday. Extended care usually exists (CampTO has it at lots of locations) but it’s often a separate registration, and it can fill up on its own. Confirm it before you pay.

Read the refund policy. Your plans stayed wobbly this long. They might wobble again. Know whether you’re buying a spot or making a donation.

Ask about sibling discounts anyway. Even last-minute, lots of camps honour them. Worst case, they say no.

The Pivot to Summer Survival Mode

In our previous guide on matching camps to your child’s personality, we talked about shopping by theme. We looked at tailoring your choices to whether your kid is a creative artist, an analytical thinker, or a mover who wakes up at 6:30 AM ready to run.

That is still the gold standard for winter planning. Right now, we are pivoting from strategy to summer survival.

You still want to respect your child’s general style, like active versus quiet, but the luxury of hunting for highly specialized programming is gone for August. In late July, the right camp is the one that aligns a child’s basic comfort zone with logistical reality. Look for a spot that is open, hours that match your workday, and a location that does not break your spirit during morning traffic.

Watch out for the last-week trap

One more thing while you’ve got the calendar open. Look at the very end of August.

A lot of camps wrap up their final session a week or more before school actually starts. So even parents who booked a “full summer” back in January sometimes discover a surprise gap sitting right before Labour Day.

Check your last camp’s end date against your school’s first day. Right now, while you’re already in fix-it mode. If there’s a hole there, the same playbook applies: waitlists, phone calls, city programs. The difference is that everyone else discovers this gap in about three weeks, and you want to be ahead of them.

The end-of-summer weeks are also when some camps run their quietest sessions, since so many families are away or winding down. Sometimes the week nobody wanted in January is sitting there wide open in August.

What a DIY week actually looks like

Let’s say you cover three weeks of August and one stubborn week just won’t happen. Here’s a version of that week that costs almost nothing and doesn’t require a miracle.

Monday, your kid goes to a friend’s place, and you owe that parent one. Tuesday is a grandparent or a sitter for the core work hours. Wednesday you work from home and accept that it’ll be a wading-pool-and-tablet kind of day. The city’s outdoor pools and splash pads are free, and there’s probably one within walking distance.

Thursday, swap back: you take your kid plus the friend from Monday. Two kids together is somehow less work than one, this is just science. Friday you take the day off, or a half day, and do the thing your kid’s been asking about all summer. The Island, Riverdale Farm, that one splash pad with the good ice cream truck nearby.

That’s a week. It counts. Write it on the calendar like it’s a camp and stop feeling weird about it.

Real talk about next year

Here’s the annoying truth about the August scramble: it isn’t an August problem. It’s a January problem that waited seven months to show up.

Registration in this city opens earlier every year. CampTO drops, the good specialty camps, that one music camp everyone whispers about. The popular weeks go within days. The parents who cruise through August are the ones who mapped the whole summer back in the winter. Vacation, camps, grandparent weeks, the risky gaps, all in one view, booked against on purpose.

It’s the night before drop-off. Or worse, the morning of. The bag’s packed, the sunscreen’s already in the side pocket, and none of that matters, because your kid has just announced, with total conviction, that they are not going. Then the excuses start piling up: their stomach suddenly hurts, they’d rather just stay home today, is camp even really necessary. By bedtime you’re wondering if signing them up was a mistake. By breakfast you’re seriously weighing whether to just keep them home.

If that’s where you are, you’re far from the only parent.

Take a breath.

This happens to pretty much every summer parent at some point, and it usually isn’t a sign anything’s gone wrong. As we’ve been building KikiPlan and talking to families about how they plan their summers, this is the question that comes up more than almost any other: not “which camp is best,” but “what happens if my kid just refuses to go.” One kid in a family will count down the days until camp starts. A sibling can seem just as excited, right up until it’s actually time to walk through the gate. What matters is figuring out which kind of “I don’t want to go” you’re actually dealing with, because the fix isn’t the same for all of them.

It’s more normal than it feels

Most kids get homesick at some point, and it's usually more common than parents expect. But it passes fast. It tends to show up in short waves, at bedtime, during a phone call home, in that quiet lull between activities when there's nothing to distract from missing you. It's not a verdict on the camp. It's not a sign your kid is fragile, either. It's just what happens when a kid gets stretched outside their routine, and most of them stretch back.

So the real goal isn’t making the resistance disappear before it ever shows up. It’s telling normal stretching apart from an actual mismatch.

Camp starts before they get there

Parents forget that camp doesn’t really start when the bus pulls up. For a lot of kids, it starts days earlier, in their head. They’re picturing a room full of kids who already know each other. They’re wondering if anyone will sit next to them at lunch, whether they’ll be the slowest swimmer, the one who can’t make it up the rock wall, the kid who gets lost looking for the bathroom. Some of them can’t even name what they’re nervous about. They just know everything is about to be different.

To be fair, adults aren't that different. Starting a new job, walking into a party full of strangers, joining a gym where everyone already seems to know the routine, most of us would feel some version of the same thing. I still get nervous talking to a new parent at pickup, and I'm a grown adult. Kids just tend to say it out loud instead of sitting on it.

Three different problems, not one

Not every “I don’t want to go” means the same thing, and that’s the part that trips most parents up.

Sometimes it’s just nerves. The worry about being away from you, about walking into a group of kids who already seem to know each other. That version usually doesn’t come with a reason. It’s just “I don’t want to go,” repeated until you both feel exhausted.

Other times the kid isn’t anxious at all. They’re just bored, or done, or the camp was never really the right fit to begin with. That one sounds different: “it’s not fun,” “I don’t like anyone there,” “we did the same thing every day.” More specific. More pointed.

And then there’s the version that has nothing to do with the camp itself. It’s a summer that got packed too tight, too many programs back to back, no familiar faces carrying over from one week to the next, no time to just exist. By week four, the resistance isn’t about camp. It’s about being tired.

Where reassurance actually works

The thing that actually helps with an anxious kid isn’t more convincing. It’s less.

Give them some control. Let them have a say in which activities they try. Talk through the actual worry, not a breezy “you’ll love it,” but whatever specific thing is sitting in their chest. Tuck a note into their bag for later.

Watch how you frame the send-off too. “You’re going to have the best day!” quietly raises the stakes. If the day turns out to be just okay, they feel like they failed at camp and at feeling better. Something like “I know this feels weird, and I think you can handle it” lands differently. You’re not arguing with the feeling. You’re standing next to it.

The goodbye itself matters more than most parents realize. Promising to wait in the parking lot all day just in case signals that you’re not sure they’ll be okay either. What actually helps is being boring and specific: this door, at this time, I’ll be here. Anxious kids don’t need a safety net. They need a plan.

For the bored kid and the burned-out kid, none of this applies. Reassurance doesn’t land when the problem isn’t emotional. It’s just the wrong camp, or too many camps, or a summer that was never built around them in the first place.

If you’ve still got some runway before camp starts, the most useful thing you can do isn’t a pep talk. It’s familiarity.

Drive past the building over the weekend so it’s not a complete unknown on day one. Do a dry run of the morning: camp clothes on, backpack packed together, lunchbox containers opened and closed a few times. If the camp sends a schedule, read it together. Knowing that crafts happen at ten and water games happen after lunch gives an anxious brain something to hold onto.

Let your kid stick their own labels on their water bottle and hat. Small, but it builds ownership. If they want to tuck something into a pocket, a photo, a tiny stuffed animal, let them. And before day one, make sure they know the name of their counsellor and frame that person as their person: “if you can’t find the washroom or just need a minute, Cory’s got you.”

When it’s time to leave, keep the goodbye short.

It’s tempting to slip away while they’re distracted, but disappearing without saying anything usually backfires. Kids remember. A quick hug, a clear “I’ll be right here at four,” and then go. It’s harder on parents than anyone admits, but stretching it out never helps the kid.

Everything is unfamiliar on day one. New faces, new rules, new routines. Even finding the right hook for a backpack can feel like a lot when you’ve never been there before. Most kids need a couple of days before they stop feeling like a visitor.

You’ve probably heard the version where a kid cries at Monday drop-off and doesn’t want to leave by Friday. That’s not rare because every camp is magic. It’s because confidence shows up after a kid’s had time to learn the routine and make one friend they’re happy to see in the morning.

Day camp and overnight camp also produce different kinds of resistance, and it helps to know which one you’re dealing with.

A day camper coming home tearful at five is often just spent. Give them a snack, let them decompress, and then ask how it went. You’ll get a very different answer.

Overnight homesickness tends to peak during the quiet stretches, rest hour, bedtime. If you get a tearful letter or a hard phone call, validate the feeling without immediately offering a way out. A kid can be genuinely homesick at 8pm and have a great time the next morning. Both things can be true, and most of the time, they are.

Loop in the camp, not just yourself

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

If the resistance is still there past day two, call the camp. Not to complain, but to problem solve together. Something like: “she’s been struggling at drop-off and felt overwhelmed at lunch, can we figure out a plan?” Most camps have seen this a hundred times and have more tools than you’d think.

One thing that works surprisingly well: ask them to give your kid a job. Carrying the clipboard, handing out equipment, helping set up before an activity starts. It sounds small but it gives their brain somewhere to go besides their own nerves, and it’s hard to feel like an outsider when you’re the one holding the list.

The wrong camp, picked in a hurry

Here’s the part most advice skips. A lot of “wrong camp” situations aren’t a parenting failure. They’re a calendar failure.

Registration for the good programs opens absurdly early, sometimes before report cards are even out. Most families end up choosing in a scramble: whatever’s still open, whatever a friend mentioned, whatever fits the commute. Matching it to what the kid actually loves comes in third, behind logistics and luck.

The fix is to reverse that order. Start from the kid, not the availability. What do they actually want to spend a week doing? What kind of pace works for them? A kid who loves building things and hates big groups is going to need a very different summer than the one you’d build around convenience.

If it’s already July and swapping isn’t realistic, you can still make smaller adjustments. Trade a rigid full week for a half day. Build in a slower week before a demanding one. Talk to the camp director about moving your kid into a different activity track.

Match the week to the actual kid in front of you, not the kid the schedule assumed you had.

Push through, or let it go?

If the resistance is vague and emotional, lean toward pushing through. Gently, with support. Most anxious kids who stick it out land somewhere good by day two or three, and they usually can’t stop talking about it by the end of the week.

If it’s specific and keeps repeating, “I don’t like it,” “it’s boring,” said the same flat way every time, take that seriously. Kids are usually better at diagnosing a bad fit than we give them credit for. They just don’t always have the words for it yet.

And then there’s a smaller category that matters more than either of those: actual red flags. Bullying that continues after you’ve told the camp. A kid who feels physically unsafe. A kid sitting alone every single day with no counsellor ever stepping in. That’s not adjustment. That’s not something to coach them through. Get them out and tell the camp exactly why.

One last thing, and it’s small but it matters: stop asking “did you have fun” at pickup. You’ll get a shrug, or a “fine,” or nothing at all.

Try “what made you laugh today” or “who’d you sit next to at lunch.” Those questions get actual stories. Sometimes the story tells you they had a great day and were just too tired to say so. Sometimes it tells you something’s wrong. Either way, you’ll know a lot more than you would from the first question.

Remember, a perfect summer isn't the goal. A summer your kid wants to be at is. And next year, you'll start there.

You open one website after another. There are sports camps, art camps, science camps, cooking camps, theatre camps, coding camps, and outdoor adventure camps. The list seems endless. Every program sounds exciting, and every brochure promises an unforgettable summer.

Then you stop and wonder if your child will actually enjoy it.

That is the question that matters most. Many parents choose a camp because a friend recommended it, because there are still spaces available, or because it looks impressive online. Those things can help narrow down your options, but they should not be the biggest factor.

The best camp is not always the most popular one. It is the one that matches your child’s personality.

A child who loves building with LEGO might spend the week watching the clock at a soccer camp. At the same time, a child who wants to run, climb, and play games all day may struggle in a quiet art studio.

There is nothing wrong with either child. They just enjoy different things.

If you are not sure where to start, think about what your child does when nobody tells them what to do. That often gives you the best clue.

The Child Who Likes to Watch Before Joining In

Some children walk into a room full of kids and jump right into the fun. Others hang back for a few minutes.

Maybe your child likes to watch before joining a game. Maybe they have one or two close friends instead of a big group. Maybe they need a little time before they feel comfortable.

That does not mean camp is not for them.

Many quiet children end up loving camp once they settle in. They often enjoy activities where they can focus on a project instead of competing with everyone around them.

Art camps, LEGO camps, cooking camps, science camps, and nature programs are often great choices. These camps usually give children time to work at their own pace while still making new friends.

The Child Who Never Stops Moving

You know the type.

The minute breakfast is over, they are riding their bike, climbing the couch, kicking a soccer ball, or asking if they can go outside. Sitting still for long periods feels impossible. If there is a puddle, a hill, or something to climb, they have already found it.

My almost 9-year-old daughter is one of these kids. She is up by 6:30 a.m. almost every day, even on weekends. By 7:30, she is asking what we’re doing, where we’re going, and why we’re still drinking our coffee. Sleeping in isn’t part of her plans.

These children usually come home happiest after a day filled with movement. They love being active, trying new challenges, and having something different to do every hour.

Sports camps, bike camps, gymnastics, outdoor adventure camps, and multi-sport programs are often a great fit. Instead of asking them to sit through long activities, these camps let them burn off the energy they already seem to have an endless supply of. And as a bonus, they might actually be tired by bedtime... at least that’s the dream.

The Creative Child

Some children always seems to have a marker, a paintbrush, or a roll of tape in their hand.

They draw birthday cards without being asked. They turn empty cardboard boxes into forts, spaceships, or pet homes. If you’ve ever gone looking for your good scissors only to find them covered in dried glue hidden somewhere, you probably have one of these kids. I know I do. Our scissors seem to disappear on a weekly basis.

My kid is one of them. One Saturday morning she told me she was bored, so I took her to the dollar store to pick out a few craft supplies. She came home with a foam wreath and some fake flowers, spread everything out on the floor, and got right to work.

I’ll be honest, I spent the next hour wondering how I was going to tell her that maybe the wreath wasn’t quite front door material. You know how some kids’ crafts turn out. Then she finished it.

It was beautiful. We hung it on our front door that day, and it’s still there.

Some children can make a new friend before you even finish saying hello.

You take them to the park, and within five minutes they’re introducing themselves to another child. By the time it’s time to leave, they’re asking if their new best friend can come over tomorrow.

I’ve seen just how quickly this can happen. One trip to the park turned into a friendship that’s still going strong years later. Kids have a way of finding their people when you least expect it.

For these children, camp is not just about the activities. They might enjoy soccer, crafts, swimming, or science, but what they’re really excited about is spending the day with other kids. Ask them how camp was, and they’ll usually start by telling you who they met before they tell you what they did.

Traditional day camps, community camps, outdoor adventure programs, and multi-activity camps are often a great fit. Children move between games, crafts, sports, and group activities throughout the day, so they have lots of chances to meet new friends and work as part of a team.

If your child comes home from camp every day with another parent's phone number because they've already made a new friend, you've probably found the right kind of camp.

The Performer

Does your child put on concerts in the living room?

Do they spend an hour picking out the perfect outfit for a show that only the family is going to watch? Maybe they make tickets, line up stuffed animals as the audience, or ask you to clap after every song.

Some kids are just happiest when they get to perform. They love telling stories, singing, dancing, acting, or making people laugh. My advice? Lean into it. If they are already doing these things at home for fun, there is a good chance they will love doing them at camp too.

Drama camps, musical theatre, dance, circus arts, and singing programs give these kids a place to be themselves. They learn new skills, make friends who enjoy the same things, and build confidence without even realizing it.

One of my favourite things about these camps is watching children come out of their shell. A child who barely wanted to walk into camp on Monday can be standing on a stage by Friday with the biggest smile on their face. Those moments are pretty special for parents to watch too.

The Animal Lover

Some children cannot walk past a dog without stopping to say hello.

They would rather visit a farm than an amusement park. They collect rocks, look for frogs, and get excited every time they spot a bird they have never seen before. If your family walk takes twice as long because your child wants to say hello to every dog in the neighbourhood, you probably have an animal lover.

Nature camps, farm camps, horseback riding, wildlife programs, and outdoor education camps can be a great fit. Instead of learning about animals from a book, they get to feed them, care for them, and experience them up close. For kids who love animals, that can be the highlight of their summer.

What If Your Child Has No Idea What They Want?

That is more common than you might think.

Many children have never tried pottery, coding, fencing, cooking, or theatre. They cannot know what they enjoy until they have the chance to try it.

Instead of booking four weeks of the same camp, consider starting with one-week programs. Camps that offer a mix of sports, crafts, science, and outdoor play are another great option because children get to sample several activities before discovering what they love.

Sometimes the biggest surprise of the summer is finding a brand-new hobby.

Should You Book the Same Camp as Their Friends?

It depends.

Having a familiar face can make the first day easier, especially for younger children or first-time campers. There is nothing wrong with choosing a camp where your child already knows someone.

Just make sure you are choosing the camp for the right reason.

Your child’s best friend might love soccer while your child spends every afternoon drawing comic books. They can still be great friends without enjoying the same camp.

A Few Questions to Ask Before You Register

• Does this match my child’s interests?

• Will they enjoy doing this for a full day?

• Does the camp fit their personality?

• Are they excited when we talk about it?

• Will they have the chance to try something new?

Remember That Children Change

One mistake many parents make is assuming their child will like the same camps every year.

Children grow quickly. The child who loved dinosaurs last summer might be obsessed with cooking this year. The child who spent every weekend playing soccer might suddenly want to learn photography or theatre.

That is part of growing up.

You finally get everyone out the door. The backpack is packed. The lunch is made. The helmet is sitting by the front door. Then your child hops on their bike and immediately announces that the brakes are weird, the seat feels funny, or one tire looks a little flat.

Not exactly the kind of surprise most parents are hoping for at 8:15 on a Monday morning.

The good news is that you don’t need to know much about bikes to catch most problems before camp starts. A quick check a few days beforehand can save a lot of stress and help make sure your child spends the week riding with friends instead of sitting on the sidelines waiting for a repair.

Start With the Tires

If there’s one thing worth checking, it’s the tires.

Bikes can sit untouched for months and slowly lose air. The tires may not look completely flat, but they can still be soft enough to make riding difficult. Kids end up working harder than they need to, and soft tires are more likely to pick up punctures.

Give each tire a squeeze. They should feel firm. If they don’t, grab a bike pump and add some air. Most tires have the recommended pressure printed on the side.

While you’re down there, take a look for cracks, worn tread, or anything stuck in the rubber. Kids seem to find every thorn, sharp rock, and mystery object imaginable.

Check the Brakes

A bike camp instructor can teach a child how to corner safely, shift gears, and ride confidently in a group. What they can’t do is magically make broken brakes work.

Have your child walk the bike forward and test both brakes. The front brake should stop the front wheel. The rear brake should stop the rear wheel. Neither brake should require your child to squeeze with all their strength.

If the brake levers pull almost all the way to the handlebars before the bike slows down, it’s worth having them adjusted before camp starts.

Listen for Strange Noises

A healthy bike is usually pretty quiet.

Take the bike for a quick spin around the block or have your child ride up and down the driveway. Listen for squeaking, grinding, clicking, or rattling sounds. Those noises don’t always mean something serious is wrong, but they usually mean the bike could use a little attention.

Chains are often the biggest culprit. If the chain looks dry, rusty, or dirty, clean it off and apply some bike chain lubricant. It only takes a few minutes and can make a huge difference.

Make Sure the Bike Still Fits

Kids have a habit of growing when you’re not paying attention.

The bike that fit perfectly last summer might suddenly feel too small. Sometimes parents don’t notice because their child can still technically ride it. That doesn’t mean they’re comfortable.

Watch your child pedal. Their knees shouldn’t be coming up toward their chest with every pedal stroke, and they shouldn’t look cramped while riding. Often a simple seat adjustment is enough, but occasionally you’ll discover the bike has been outgrown entirely.

Tighten Anything Loose

Take a minute to check the handlebars, pedals, and seat.

Nothing should wobble, shake, or move unexpectedly. Camp bikes get used a lot during the week, and small problems tend to become bigger problems when a child is riding for hours every day.

You don’t need to inspect every bolt on the bike. Just make sure everything feels solid and secure.

Don’t Forget the Helmet

The bike usually gets all the attention, but the helmet deserves a quick check too.

Put it on your child’s head and make sure it sits level rather than tipped backward. The straps should be snug but comfortable. If the helmet slides around when they move their head, it needs adjusting.

It’s also worth checking whether your child has outgrown it. A helmet that fit two summers ago may not fit today.

Label Everything

Every camp ends up with a collection of lost water bottles, lunch containers, and helmets. By August, the lost-and-found table looks like a garage sale.

Take five minutes and label everything.

The helmet.

The water bottle.

The lunch bag.

The extra hoodie that your child swears they won’t lose.

You already know how that story ends.

Some Great Toronto Bike Camps

Most Toronto parents have heard of Pedalheads, and for good reason. Their programs are popular, well organized, and available in several locations throughout the city. They offer programs ranging from learning to ride all the way up to more advanced cycling skills.

CampTO also offers cycling-focused programs at various locations and can be a great option for families looking for something close to home.

If your child already loves riding and wants something a little more adventurous, it’s worth looking beyond the biggest names.

Bateman’s MTB School has built a strong reputation among mountain biking families. Their programs focus on trail riding, bike handling, and building confidence on more challenging terrain. For kids who already spend weekends riding trails with their parents, this can be a fantastic fit.

Evergreen Brick Works has offered cycling programs that combine riding with outdoor exploration in Toronto’s trail network. Many city kids spend very little time on natural trails, so the experience feels completely different from riding around the neighbourhood.

Joyride 150, located in Markham, is another interesting option. As Canada’s largest indoor bike park, it gives riders access to pump tracks, jumps, and technical features that most kids never encounter during everyday riding. It’s especially popular with children who already love bikes and are looking for something beyond a traditional camp experience.

Many programs are free, while others are offered at heavily subsidized rates that are far lower than what most private camps charge. For families trying to piece together an entire summer schedule, CampTO can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

For 2026, every child attending CampTO also receives a nutritious mid-morning snack at no additional cost. It’s a small detail, but any parent who has packed enough camp lunches knows every little bit helps.

There is one thing you need to know.

Registration can be competitive.

Experienced Toronto parents often treat CampTO registration morning like an Olympic event. Accounts are created ahead of time. Passwords are tested. Coffee is poured. Multiple browser tabs are open. Then everyone waits for registration to begin and hopes they get the spots they want before programs fill up.

The Welcome Policy Can Make a Huge Difference

If camp costs are stretching your budget, the City’s Welcome Policy is worth looking into.

The program provides eligible Toronto residents with recreation credits that can be used toward registered City programs. That includes CampTO, swimming lessons, sports programs, memberships, after-school activities, and other recreation programs throughout the year.

For 2026, eligible children and youth under 25 can receive a yearly credit of more than $680.

For some families, that credit covers a substantial portion of their summer plans.

One misunderstanding comes up every year. Parents assume that once they receive approval, they automatically have a camp spot waiting for them. Unfortunately, the subsidy and registration process are separate.

Think of the Welcome Policy as helping you pay for camp. You still need to register before the spaces disappear.

The best approach is to apply well before registration season begins so your credit is already available when camp spots open.

The Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund

Every child deserves the chance to spend part of the summer making friends, learning new skills, getting covered in paint, collecting bug bites, and coming home with grass stains on their shorts.

For some families, cost is the biggest obstacle.

The Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund helps children attend summer camps when financial barriers would otherwise make participation difficult. The fund supports both day camps and overnight camps for school-aged children throughout Ontario.

One reason many families are unfamiliar with the program is that applications often happen through schools, community agencies, and local organizations rather than directly through parents.

If camp costs are creating a challenge, speak with your child’s school, community centre, settlement worker, or local family support agency. They may already know about funding opportunities available in your area.

YMCA Day Camp Financial Assistance

The YMCA has been helping GTA families access camp programs for decades.

In addition to operating day camps throughout the region, the YMCA works with municipalities to help eligible families apply childcare subsidies and other forms of assistance toward camp fees.

Availability varies depending on location and funding, so it is worth contacting your local YMCA branch as early as possible.

Like almost everything related to summer camps, the earlier you start asking questions, the more options you are likely to find.

Other Organizations That Help Families Pay for Camp

Many parents know about CampTO and the Welcome Policy. Far fewer know about the long list of charities and organizations that exist specifically to help children attend camp.

Some focus on sports programs. Others support overnight camps. Some serve families facing financial hardship, while others focus on particular communities or circumstances.

Programs worth exploring include:

• Canadian Tire Jumpstart

• Tim Hortons Foundation Camps

• Moorelands Camp

Don’t Forget to Ask the Camp Directly

This may be the most overlooked piece of advice on this entire list.

Call the camp.

Or send an email.

Seriously.

Many private camps offer bursaries, payment plans, sibling discounts, or financial assistance programs that are barely mentioned on their websites. Sometimes the information is buried deep inside a registration package. Sometimes it isn’t posted publicly at all.

Parents often hesitate because they feel awkward asking.

Camp directors have these conversations all the time.

A simple message explaining that you’re interested in the program but concerned about affordability is perfectly reasonable. The worst outcome is that they say no. In many cases, they may point you toward assistance programs you didn’t know existed.

A Few Things to Know Before You Apply

Most financial assistance programs open earlier than parents expect.

Really early.

Some applications begin in January or February, long before most families are thinking about sunscreen, swimsuits, or camp backpacks.

You will almost always need income information as part of the application process, so having recent tax documents available can make the process much easier.

It’s also important to remember that receiving financial assistance does not automatically reserve a camp space. Funding applications and camp registrations are usually separate processes.

The families who have the smoothest experience tend to start early, apply for assistance early, and register as soon as programs become available.

Summer Camp Shouldn’t Be Out of Reach

Do not surprise your child with camp two weeks before it starts. Give them time to get used to the idea.

Talk about what their days will actually look like. What time do they start? What activities will they do? Who else will be there? Kids get anxious about the unknown, so the more familiar camp feels before they walk through those doors, the better.

If the camp has a website with photos or videos, go through it together. Let them ask questions. Let them be nervous. That is completely normal.

Let Them Have a Say

Kids who feel like camp was their choice do better at camp. Full stop.

If you are still deciding, show them a few options that match their interests and ask which one sounds most fun. Even small decisions, like picking out their own water bottle or choosing which hoodie to bring, give them a sense of ownership over the experience.

When kids help pack their own bag (with your supervision), they know what they have and where it is. That alone takes a lot of anxiety out of day one.

Go With a Friend

If you can make this happen, do it. Having a familiar face at camp makes everything easier, especially for kids who are shy or nervous about new situations.

Talk to the parents in your school community or neighbourhood group chat. Find out where other families are sending their kids and see if the timing lines up. A lot of Toronto camps run multiple sessions throughout the summer, so there is usually flexibility to get two kids into the same week even if you did not plan it from the start.

A few things to keep in mind: make sure both kids are registered for the exact same session, not just the same camp. And remind your child that going with a friend is a bonus, not a reason to only stick with that one person all week. The whole point of camp is meeting new people too.

Practice Independence at Home

Camp counsellors are there to support your child, but they will not remind them to drink water, reapply sunscreen, or put on a dry shirt after swimming. The more your child can manage on their own before camp starts, the more confident they will feel once they get there.

In the weeks leading up to camp, have them make their own bed, pack their own lunch, and keep track of their own belongings. These are small things but they matter a lot when your child is navigating a full day without you.

Build the Right Expectations

Be honest with your kid. Some days at camp will be incredible. Some days might be hard. They might not love every activity. They might have a disagreement with another kid. That is all normal and it does not mean something is wrong.

What matters most is that they know who to go to when something feels off. Make sure they understand that their counsellors are there to help them, not just to run the schedule, but to actually listen if they are having a tough day.

The Packing List

Keep it simple and practical. Here is what your child needs for a day camp:

Clothing

• Comfortable t-shirt and shorts they do not mind getting dirty;

• A hoodie or light sweatshirt for cooler mornings;

• Broken-in running shoes, not brand new ones, not sandals;

• A swimsuit and towel if the camp has water activities;

• A change of clothes in their bag.

Daily Essentials

• Reusable water bottle, a big one;

• Sunscreen in lotion or stick form, not aerosol;

• Bug spray if the camp is outdoors;

• A healthy lunch that does not need refrigeration. Most day camps do not have fridges;

• Nut-free snacks. The majority of Toronto camps are nut-free facilities.

Health

• Any prescription medication must be in the original pharmacy bottle with your child’s name and dosage printed on the label. Camps cannot administer medication without this.

• Let the camp know in writing about any allergies or health conditions before the first day, not at drop-off.

Label Everything

• Every single item needs your child’s name on it. Water bottles, shoes, towels, lunchboxes, hoodies. If it does not have a name on it, assume it ends up in the lost and found.

Leave at home: Phone, tablet, toys, or anything expensive.

Drop-Off Day

Keep your goodbye short and confident. Kids take their emotional cues from you, so if you look worried and linger at the door, they will feel worried too.

Say goodbye warmly, remind them of something fun they are looking forward to that day, and leave. It sounds simple but it genuinely makes a difference.

If your child is upset at drop-off, trust the camp staff. They have seen this hundreds of times. Most kids are having fun within twenty minutes of the parent leaving.

At Pickup

Avoid asking “did you have fun?” as your first question. Kids often give one-word answers to that and you learn nothing.

Try asking something more specific instead. What did you have for lunch? Who did you sit with? What was the weirdest thing that happened today? You will get much better answers and a much clearer picture of how their day actually went.

If Your Child Says They Do Not Want to Go Back

Give it a few days before you read too much into it. The first week of camp is an adjustment for almost every kid. Tired, overstimulated, and a little overwhelmed at the end of a long day is not the same as genuinely unhappy.

If after a full week your child is still dreading it every morning, that is worth a conversation with the camp director. Ask for their honest read on how your child is doing during the day. Often what a child says at 5pm is very different from how they actually spent the hours between drop-off and pickup.

The Bottom Line

The best thing you can do to prepare your child for summer day camp is start the conversation early, keep your expectations realistic, and let them feel like they had a say in the decision.

A little nervousness on day one is completely normal. By the end of the first week, most kids do not want it to end.

My daughter Dahlia, has been taking piano lessons at Riverdale School of Music for almost a year. The school was founded by Becky, who also teaches piano herself. That alone tells you what kind of place RSM is. Dahlia’s teacher is Elaine, the kind of teacher you hope your kid gets. Warm, patient, genuinely invested. Music inspired by the movies kids are actually obsessed with right now. Frozen, Lion King, Matilda, Kpop Demon Hunters. The week blends imagination and storytelling exercises, individual vocal coaching sessions, rhythm and listening games, arts and crafts, and daily movement breaks outside.

It’s part music camp, part theatre, part adventure. Perfect for the younger kid who loves to perform but isn’t ready for something too structured.

🎭 Musical Theatre Stars Camp

This one is for the kid who knows every word to every song in every musical they’ve ever seen. Vocal coaching, group singing, choreography, acting, character development, confidence building, all built around the classics. Wicked, Matilda, Frozen, Sound of Music.

Who This Is Really For

You don’t need a musical prodigy. You don’t need a kid who already takes lessons.

• Location: Toronto traffic is tough. Look for camps near your home, work, or a caregiver.

• Before & After Care: If you work normal business hours, make sure the camp offers extended hours.

• Busing: Some camps offer school bus pickups across the GTA. This can save you hours of driving.

• Camp Hours: Double-check exact pickup times. A camp that ends at 2:30 PM requires a very different schedule than one that ends at 4:00 PM.

• Child Interests: The best camp is simply the one your child is excited to go to!
